School Bus Solution

SCHOOL BUS FLEETS

School Bus Safety and Student Care

Peace of mind for parents. Proof of duty of care for operators — on every bus, every stop, every school day.

What changes when you deploy

  • Boarding registers fill themselves at the door, with the student's face as the token.
  • Every stop is recorded, and vehicles that do not yield to crossing students leave an evidence trail.
  • End-of-route sweeps become structured, confirmed steps that the office can audit — not habits that drift.
  • Driver fatigue and distraction are caught in the cab, in the moment, with a full record behind every alert.

Scenarios on this page

School runs carry a load no freight van does: children, and the trust of their parents. SOHANIoT treats that as an engineering problem. Industrial-grade AI cameras and edge devices — designed, built, and tested in our own facility — turn each bus into a system that watches, alerts, and records, so the people in charge always know what is happening on board.

This is not a software add-on bolted onto consumer hardware. It is a full-stack chain — certified hardware, edge AI, and the SOHANIoT Cloud Platform — delivered by the manufacturer that builds the devices. That is why the system keeps working in vibration, heat, and the daily abuse of a school run.

01

Cardless student attendance

Students walk on. Names log themselves. No cards to lose, tap, or borrow.

A headcount is only useful if it is true. Manual roll calls are slow, and card systems break down the moment a student forgets, loses, or swaps a card. SOHANIoT replaces both with automatic identification at the boarding door: the register builds itself, and the school sees, in real time, exactly who is on each bus.

For the operator, this turns attendance from a morning scramble into a clean data feed. For the parent, it is the difference between wondering whether the child made the bus and knowing. The same record answers the daily phone calls: the school office can check in seconds whether a student boarded, and which bus they are on — without radioing the driver mid-route.

AI face-based boarding check

An AI camera at the door identifies each student as they step on board and writes the match into the trip record. The check-in feed appears on the SOHANIoT Cloud Platform within seconds, and schools can export the data to their own student-information systems. Recognition runs inside the normal boarding flow — students do not stop, scan, or queue for a separate step. .

No-card flow closes the swapping loophole

Students carry nothing and tap nothing, so there is nothing to forget, lose, or pass to a friend. Identity is bound to the person, not to a plastic token, so the register reflects who actually boarded — not who happened to be holding the card. That distinction matters on a school bus, where a shared card can quietly defeat the whole purpose of a headcount.

Privacy controls that fit school rules

The data in this system belongs to minors, and SOHANIoT builds the workflow around that fact. Face enrollment is managed per student with guardian consent, templates are encrypted at rest and in transit, and retention windows and access rights are configurable to match local regulation. .

Live feed and guardian notifications

The fleet office watches a live boarding feed per bus, with each student's name, time, and trip recorded. With opt-in consent, guardians receive a notification when their child boards and when the child alights. Parents get quiet reassurance on every journey; operators get a service differentiator that schools notice. .

Optional: schools that prefer not to store facial data can fit palm-vein readers at the door — the same cardless flow, backed by a different biometric. .

02

Crossing safety at stops

The most dangerous minute of a school route is the one at the roadside.

Safer stops: the crossing zone stays watched while children board and leave.

Students step off the bus and cross where traffic expects to move. One impatient driver can turn a routine stop into an incident — and without a record, the operator is left arguing about what happened. SOHANIoT puts a dedicated camera on that moment and keeps the evidence.

The goal is twofold. First, deterrence: vehicles passing a stopped school bus are far less likely to test the crossing when the plate is being read. Second, accountability: when an incident does occur, the operator and the authorities get a clip, not a story. The same recording answers the questions that follow an incident — was the crossing arm out, were students on the road, did the vehicle slow?

Stop-zone capture that watches the crossing

An exterior camera covers the approach lanes beside the bus while students board and alight. Every vehicle that passes through the crossing zone during that window is captured on video, with event time and GPS position written into the clip. Footage is stored securely on the vehicle DVR and mirrored to the cloud on alert. .

Automatic flagging of vehicles that fail to yield

When a vehicle passes while students are in the crossing zone, the system marks the event automatically. No office staff member needs to watch hours of raw footage to find one incident — the near-miss is already clipped, tagged, and waiting in the event log.

Readable plates, day and night

The crossing camera is tuned for plate capture, with wide dynamic range for bright days and infrared support for early-morning and winter runs. Plate recognition runs on the edge, so the system keeps working even where cellular coverage is weak. .

Clean evidence packages for authorities

Each flagged event becomes an evidence package: video clip, plate capture, timestamp, GPS position, and route ID. The operator can hand the package to the school or traffic authority without assembling it by hand. .

03

Left-behind prevention

An end-of-route sweep should be impossible to skip, not merely encouraged.

No child left behind - the end-of-route check is prompted and recorded.

A child asleep on a rear seat is every operator's worst scenario. It can happen with an exhausted driver, a dim interior, and a silent child — three small failures that should never be allowed to stack. SOHANIoT layers three independent safeguards so that no single failure is enough to end a day badly.

Each layer works alone and reinforces the others. The driver is asked to look; the sensors verify; the AI covers what both can miss. The bus cannot go home silent.

Layer one: guided driver walk-around check

At the end of each route, the driver follows a structured check on the in-vehicle terminal: walk the aisle, confirm each seat zone, then close the sweep zone by zone. The terminal records the sequence with timestamps. Trips that close without a completed sweep are flagged on the SOHANIoT Cloud Platform, so a skipped check becomes visible to the fleet office — not a habit that nobody audits.

Layer two: interior motion detection

After the engine is off and the route is closed, the interior camera keeps watching for movement. Any motion detected in what should be an empty bus raises an immediate alarm — catching the child who re-entered the bus, or who was never seen leaving it. The alert reaches the driver on site and the fleet office in parallel.

Layer three: AI person detection that does not need motion

Motion detection misses the child who is asleep, curled under a blanket, or sitting perfectly still. The SOHANIoT AI layer looks for a person rather than movement: it can raise the alarm for a student who is completely stationary. This is the layer that closes the gap no checklist alone can close — the difference between detecting a child and detecting a fidget.

Escalation that reaches someone, somewhere

Each layer can trigger a local alarm loud enough for a driver still on site to hear, and a cloud alert that escalates to the fleet manager and school contact if nobody responds within a set window. The response window and routing are configurable per operator, so the right person is reached in the right order. .

04

Driver safety and coaching

Students trust the driver. The system watches over both.

Driver state is the one variable that changes every single day — sleep, stress, and distraction do not follow a timetable. SOHANIoT monitors the driver continuously, so fatigue and distraction are caught at the moment they appear, while an alert can still change the outcome.

For the operator, driver monitoring is also an audit trail. When an incident happens, the record shows whether the driver was attentive, warned, and coached — which is what duty of care looks like on paper.

Done well, driver monitoring is also a retention tool. Careful drivers notice when a fleet actually enforces safety, and they tend to stay where it does. Schools notice it too: a driver roster that survives the hard seasons is part of student safety.

Driver state monitoring on every shift

The SOHANIoT ADAS-DMS Camera watches for the signs that precede accidents: drooping eyelids, nodding head, phone use, eyes off the road. Each event triggers an in-cab alert in real time — a chime, a voice prompt — where it can still change behavior. .

Escalation when the driver does not respond

If in-cab alerts go unanswered, the event escalates to the dispatch desk with live vehicle position and video context. The office can speak to the driver, arrange a relief stop, or pull the bus from service — with the GPS and video record behind the decision. The route does not continue in silence while a supervisor watches a dashboard.

Coaching grounded in real events, with SOHAN CoPilot

Every alert feeds a driver profile: frequency, time of day, route, and pattern. SOHAN CoPilot converts that history into individual coaching — targeted feedback on the habits that actually appeared in the data, plus progress tracking the fleet manager can review. Coaching stops being generic advice and becomes a conversation about specific events. .

Footage that protects good drivers too

The recordings that catch unsafe behavior also clear drivers who did nothing wrong. When a parent, an insurer, or a regulator asks what happened on a run, the answer is a timestamped video record. That cuts both ways — and it is exactly the protection a careful driver deserves and an operator wants on file.

From pilot to district-wide

A safety rollout should not wait for a full fleet-replacement cycle. Districts typically start with the routes that need it most and expand on evidence, not on promises.

  • Pick the pilot group: routes carrying the youngest students, or buses covering the most stops.
  • Fit the hardware in a normal maintenance window — cameras, DVR, and sensors install in hours per bus. .
  • Configure attendance groups, crossing zones, and escalation contacts together with the district transport office.
  • Run the pilot across a full school week and review the alert log side by side.
  • Refine thresholds, then roll out to the rest of the fleet with dashboard access for the district.
  • Define the success measures before day one: boarding-check coverage, completed sweeps, alert response times — then score the pilot against them.
  • Agree who answers what: the school office, the transport office, driver supervisors, and the SOHANIoT support line each get a clear role in the alert flow.

SOHANIoT engineers stay on the call through pilot and rollout. The team that builds the hardware is the team answering support questions — one accountable line from factory floor to school run. The district can hold its own dashboard view from day one; transparency like that makes the next budget conversation easier. .

Why fleets build this with SOHANIoT

Built and tested where the hardware is made.

SOHANIoT cameras, DVRs, and sensors are engineered, assembled, and quality-tested in our own factory, with industrial-grade design and E-Mark certification as standard. One manufacturer, one warranty, one point of contact — no finger-pointing between vendors when something needs fixing. .

Your stack, our hardware and AI.

Attendance data, alerts, and video export through open APIs, so districts can feed their own student systems — or SOHANIoT can white-label the whole experience for a regional operator who wants its own brand in front of schools. .

Right-sized, not over-engineered.

Start with one safeguard — attendance alone, or left-behind prevention alone — and expand later. Hardware is modular and installs in hours, so a district can pilot on two buses before committing a fleet. No enterprise platform purchase is required to begin.
